Raksha Bandhan Special: The Historical Significance
Observed in India and Nepal, Raksha Bandhan is a festival which celebrates the relationship between a brother and a sister. Raksha means protection and bandhan means pure relationship. Also known as Rakhi Purnima, the festival is also celebrated in some parts of Pakistan. The festival is not just observed by the Hindus, but Sikhs and some Muslims. A sister ties a rakhi, a thread, on her brother’s wrist, showing her love and prayers for her brother’s well-being, and the brother vows to protect her lifelong. He also gives his sister a gift in return.
