Krishna Janmashtami is observed every year in the month of Bhaadrapad, Ashtami tithi and Krishna paksh of the Hindu calendar. The day is celebrated as the birth of Lord Krishna.

Janmashtami is being celebrated with religious fervor on August 10, Friday. Devotees of Lord Krishna, the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, observe fast on this day and offer prayers to Bal Gopal.

How to fast?

1. Wake up early in the morning, take a bath and wear clean clothes.

2. Either keep the fast on just fruits or have meal once in the day.

3. The meal you eat once in a day should not have salt, onion and garlic. You can use sendha namak or kuttu ka aata, and boiled potato to prepare the meal.

4. After taking bath, place Lord Krishna and Devaki’s idol in a cradle and then offer ganga jal or panchamrit.

5. Offer new clothes and flowers while worshipping Lord Krishna.

6. Offer water, flowers, gandha and fruits to the moon and celebrate in the midnight.

What to offer?

1. Offer while coloured sweets and basil leaves to Lord Vishnu. It brings wealth and prosperity.

2. Chant the following mantra 11 times: Klim Krishnay Vasudevay Harih Parmatmane Pranatahkleshnashay Govinday Namho Namah. After this, offer yellow clothes and basil leaves.

3. Doing abhishek at midnight with saffron mixed milk may help you get rid of all your troubles.

4. Light a diya with ghee in front of basil plant in the evening and chant this mantra: Om Vasudevay Namah. Take 11 parikrama of the plant.
